Saturday was our planned crew change day, but instead of changing at Cork, Terry fancied going on to Kinsale, where he had been on his honeymoon several decades earlier. So to fill in the day, we left the mooring, refuelled and then went for a tour around Cobh harbour.
We passed the naval base on Haulbowline Island, the ferry terminals and went up as far as the dockyards opposite Monkstown. Then down the north side past a brightly painted multi-coloured Cobh.
Heard lifeboat 1550 on the radio – is she wondering where we are?
Unfortunately
as the day progressed it was back to grey and cold weather again. By 12:50 we
were leaving the outer harbour entrance buoy and headed inside of Daunt Rock and
around to Kinsale. The wind was again on the nose and increasing. Another yacht
was tacking up the coast and dipping into the bays to avoid the seas. We opted
for the easy option and just motored the rest of the way, arriving at Kinsale
Y.C. pontoons at 16:15.
Distance travelled 30nm.
Ashore, the skipper went to mail the marina key back to the harbour master in Kilmore Quay and replenish the food supplies. The departing 3 crew members had a fruitless search for overnight accommodation in Kinsale. and decided instead to head north and find somewhere en route away from the tourist centres.
The skipper’s family - wife Maggie, son Rory and friend Bob, arrived in Kinsale around 18:30 in Terry’s car, after a long drive from Bangor.
Keen to be off to find that elusive B&B, there was a hasty unload and repack of the car and Terry, Susie and Gordon swiftly departed and the new crew settled in aboard for their first night of a 3-week cruise.
